ISIS - Postrocking the centre of Holland and the middle of nowhere!
On a cold December night there was one thing to look out to. No, not Christmas you crazy old cat! ISIS was postrocking Tivoli in Utrecht, and they even brought some friends!!There is one thing you can count on with an ISIS show: The support act is bound to be great, amazing or downright weird. Guapo hails from London and has specialised in wearing 70s approved outfits, tight and black.
The band's music borders on 70s spun-out progmusic. If they warped back in time they could probably play with Pink Floyd. The tracks are a bit on the long side and miss the heavy dynamics that make ISIS work, a few more heavy riffs wouldn't be a bad thing. Some songs seemed to have a never ending buildup without an actual climax. Something that your grandfather will probably be familiar with when he lies in bed with grandma. All in all, a good starter. The spacey melodies seemed to be a hit with some in the crowd and it was a good warm-up for the main band. (Carn)
While tempted to comment on the Pink Floyd comment above (something about these guys not even being able to hold a candle up to PF), I will focus on ISIS. I had never seen this band before, so was a complete blank sheet going into this.
ISIS came on and set a nice tone, making me expect that it was going to be a long and ambient night...However, where Guapo failed, ISIS prevailed! There were very, very long build ups, but they actually ended in great climaxes and they aren't shy of a heavy riff here and there aswell!! Great guitar riffs, even greater drums! These guys know what they're doing. The occasional vocals were just enough, so that ISIS keeps its own style.
All in all this was a good musical experience, and everyone should go see this band. Like stated earlier, these guys know their instruments. Maybe a bit of a longer show next time? (LondonCustoms)
